Silent Concord incorporates ideas from many sources:
Silent Concord and Buddhism value silence highly. However, unlike Buddhism, Silent Concord does not advocate any particular reason for embracing silence or method of using silence. Each Silent Concord participant is free to discover their own reasons and methods for experiencing silence. More Info: buddhanet.net

Silent Concord and Unitarian Universalism Silent Concord and Unitarian Universalism do not impose a belief test upon participants; instead, they both support each participant's "spiritual journey" wherever it may lead. Participants are not expected or required to adopt any belief on faith, although participants are welcome to hold faith-based beliefs if desired. Silent Concord and Unitarian Universalism both stress the importance of community. Each Silent Concord is a community united by shared silence and the possibilities it provides. More Info: uua.org
Deist Benjamin Franklin wrote: I had been religiously educated as a Presbyterian; and tho' some of the Dogmas of the Persuasion, such as the Eternal Decrees of God, Election, Reprobation, &c. appear'd to me unintelligible, others doubtful, & I early absented myself from the Public Assemblies of the Sect, Sunday being my Studying-Day, I never was without some religious Principles; I never doubted, for instance, the Existence of the Deity, that he made the World, & govern'd it by his Providence; that the most acceptable Service of God was the doing of Good to Man; that our Souls are immortal; and that all Crime will be punished & Virtue rewarded either here or hereafter; these I esteem'd the Essentials of every Religion, and being found in all the Religions we had in our Country I respected them all, tho' with different degrees of Respect as I found them more or less mix'd with other Articles which without any Tendency to inspire, promote, or confirm Morality, serv'd principally to divide us & make us unfriendly to one another. Deism promotes a theistic worldview without promoting ancillary beliefs that exist principally to cause unnecessary conflict among people. Shared Concord goes beyond Deism by neither promoting nor discouraging a particular worldview. More Info: deism.com
Silent Concord and Standardization There are two primary benefits to formal standardization: assuring interoperability and providing an orderly change process. Within the context of Silent Concord, interoperability translates into uniformity of experience. It should be possible to attend a Silent Concord anywhere in the world and have essentially the same experience. The Silent Concord Foundation publishes the Silent Concord Specification to promote uniformity among Silent Concords worldwide. The Silent Concord Foundation also operates a Change Control Board to implement an orderly process for updating the Silent Concord Specification. More Info: wikipedia.org
Silent Concord and the Capability Maturity Model Many organizations use a Capability Maturity Model (CMM) to measure the maturity of their product development and management processes, recognizing that a mature process is a key to their success. The design and operation of the Silent Concord Foundation Change Control Board is inspired by CMM. More Info: wikipedia.org

According to an egocentric point of view, beliefs are like personal possessions - subordinate to a supervisory ego that either accepts or rejects them. Memetics considers instead the point of view of a belief, for which a human mind is merely a temporary vehicle for projecting itself into the future. Memetics establishes an equivalence between the spread of beliefs through human societies and genetics. Within memetics, a belief is called a "meme." A meme is the mental equivalent of a gene. Memes compete to occupy minds in the same way that genes compete to occupy bodies. Memes that are more successful in occupying human minds come to dominate the human "meme pool." A diversity of memes, like a diversity of genes, is a good thing. Unfortunately, the egocentric viewpoint encourages the degeneration of conflicts between memes into conflicts between the egos carrying those memes. By uniting people in shared silence, Silent Concord emphasizes our common nature as meme carriers. Noisy Discord is where conflicts between memes - and the people who carry them - can be discussed in an open, tolerant manner. More Info: wikipedia.org |
